Like many of you, I’m always on the lookout for filling, healthy snack ideas. Bonus points if the kids can make the snack themselves! Our whole family loves these whole wheat Parmesan pita chips, and they are so simple to make. Little kids can do everything except the cutting and using the oven. Older kids can probably handle these all on their own. Try out our seasoning blend, then experiment with your own!
Whole Wheat Parmesan Pita Chips
Ingredients:
- 3 whole wheat pita breads
- 3 Tablespoons melted butter (or olive oil/melted coconut oil)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/8-1/4 teaspoon salt
- grated Parmesan cheese (about 1/4 cup)
Method:
Preheat oven to 400° F.
Melt the butter in a small dish or measuring cup. Stir in the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and salt. Use a pastry brush to coat each pita bread with the seasoned butter. My kids have always loved jobs that involve the pastry brush – it’s like art time in the kitchen!
When all the pitas are buttered, cut each one into 8 triangles. A pizza wheel would work great here, if you have one. Otherwise, an adult or older child can step in and do the cutting.
Arrange the pita triangles on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Sprinkle a little grated Parmesan cheese on each wedge.
Bake at 400° F for approximately 10 minutes, till golden brown and crispy around the edges. I started checking mine around 8 minutes, and took them out after 11 minutes. The chips will also crisp-up more as they cool.
Cool the pita chips, then dig in! My girls gobbled these up as a stand-alone snack, but they would certainly be delicious paired with hummus, guacamole, or any of your favorite dips. I have a feeling these will be in heavy rotation for our summer snacking!
