We have always enjoyed making pretzels at home, preparing the dough and counting down the minutes ’till they are freshly baked out of the oven. Then I have stumbled upon a big secret tip that took everything to a new level….suddenly it was so much quicker and easier to make pretzels!

What if I tell you that you don’t have to worry about making your dough, knead and everything and still have these perfect pretzel bites? How? So simple….using store bought fresh pizza dough and boiling the pretzels in water combined with baking soda before getting them into the oven.

This secret tip has made such a big difference between those sometimes average pretzels and golden, crunchy bites this recipe can deliver! They are the perfect party food! The pretzels are soft, chewy, salty and amazingly good dipped in your favorite sauce!

Just please, make sure you add the baking soda slowly and in small quantities because it will bubble up so fast….and we don’t want anyone getting burnt.

Homemade Pretzel Bites Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 bag/ tube or container store bought fresh pizza dough
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg lightly beaten

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 400F. Line up a baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
  2. Roll out the fresh pizza dough on top of a cutting board and cut dough into 2″ by 2″ squares, then roll them up into balls.
  3. Add water to a large deep saucepan and bring it to boil. Add baking soda, really careful slowly and in small quantities because it will bubble up so fast and stir.
  4. Add dough balls and cook for 1-2 minutes or until they puff up and float.
  5. Gently remove dough balls with a slotted spoon and place them on prepared baking tray.
  6. Brush a good amount of the beaten egg on top of each dough ball and with some salt.
  7. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool down a bit before serving them. Serve pretzel bites with favorite dipping sauces.
