With the Kids

Ice Cream in a Baggie

With summer here and the kiddies needing a cool treat, we made ice cream in a baggie. It is fun for all and a yummy snack. But wear gloves or your fingers will freeze.

Ice Cream in a Baggie:

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup half and half

1 Tbsp sugar

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

1 gallon size Zip Bag, 2 sandwish size bags

2 cups ice, 1 Tbsp rock salt

Pour all the ingredients into one of the small baggies. I use a large cup to place the zip bag in to keep the ingredients steady.

Zip it tight and get rid of excess air. Then put it into the second small baggie and Zip tight again. The second baggie here is to prevent the rock salt or ice from getting into the ice cream if the baggie comes open. Then add 2 cups of ice and 1 T rock salt to the large bag. Place the small bags inside the large and seal.

Now let the kids shake themselves silly. It can take 15-20 minutes of fairly vigorus shaking, so gloves are a good choice. I used my oven mitts. And Moms, be prepared that your kiddies will want you to take over very quickly. I just tell them, that if I help, I get to eat some too.

Let out some of the water that is formed as you go. You can add more ice if necessary. I tend to stop sooner than I could because I am happy with it soft serve, and my hands get tired. This is fun to make, but I like to pull out the real ice cream maker once we’ve had our fun and go for some more ice cream with hardly any work!

Have fun with this fun Summer treat and remember the spoons.

  1. I’ve done the same thing, only with two metal coffee containers. That way, you can wrap the outer one with a towel and the kids can just roll back and forth to each other. Very fun!

  2. We did this for our scouts – its awesome. And you can make sorbet too! Water instead of cream and Lemon Juice instead of vanilla!

  3. sorry… i was saying i love home made ice cream, but i was stopped by the attack of the killer 8 month old
