I have finally mastered the ever popular crochet pattern, The Granny Square! But these days, there are so many fabulous patterns, colors, and tutorials to choose from… these are not your granny’s squares!
This style of crochet is my new obsession. It’s addicting to keep crocheting in a round. Your edges always come out straight, or circle if that’s what style you’re going for. No edge is needed, they are stand alone beauties.
Here is a great video series that I watched to get me started. Video 1 is below, it’s very basic for beginners. She shares this is a 5 part video series, so keep following along with each video to master the Granny!
Here are just a few I’ve been whipping up. Although I’m still getting the hang of it. I hope to start adding in more colors and making a patch blanket.
- One Skein Baby Blanket – for donation
- Scrap Granny Blanket – no rhyme or reason, just adding my yarn scraps to the mix to practice the stitch! Not sure how big it will get. I’ll share a picture when I’m done.
- UPDATE: Here’s my full granny square patch quilt I’ve shared. It was so much fun to crochet! It’s one of my favorite blankets in the house.
Now for some really amazing color patterns and tutorials, follow these fabulous links, all pictured above. I want to make one of each!

What are you crocheting? Have you started recently?
Beth is AWESOME! I have learned so much from her. She has even helped me out when I’ve been in a bind or stuck on a pattern or having trouble with a stitch. She has so much talent and a great attitude! A teacher’s spirit, for sure!
It must be a ‘make’ kind of morning. First I’m thinking about making woodblocks for my friend’s kid, then I stumble across your granny squares tweet! Now I’m inspired to try making multicolored blocks :)
I definitely need to try these! I taught myself to crochet and have done two ripple blankets. I’m ready for something new!
Years ago my Aunt taught me to make the granny squares, and I loved it. I made a cushion back for our rocker and when my Mom made me a new set she had made…I hated to change it.
Granny squares have evolved so much since I began crocheting almost 40 yrs ago! There are some very pretty changes that have been made.
For a second I thought you whipped out all those granny squares pictured at the top. I thought….does this woman ever sleep? The granny square is pretty fun. I just finished my four last night, but kept them round and I am adding a scallop.
I love granny squares. My mom makes little granny squares from her scraps and then when she has enough, joins them to make throw blankets. I think I’m going to start to do the same :D
