How to Create a Kindness Quilt

As we raise the next generation, one thing we should all be doing more of is encouraging kindness. Whether you are doing that at home or in the classroom, here are a few ways you can start; 14 ways to spread love and kindness, leave notes for those you love, and tips for discouraging bullying that start at home. Below, we are showing you how to make a simple kindness quilt that can be used over and over again.

Our kindness quilt is not about giving children ideas on how to be kind, it’s acknowledging those moments that they were caught being kind. As adults we can tell them over and over the different ways they can be kind to others, but when you get down on their level and acknowledge a moment they were genuinely kind, their face will light up.

The quilt I made above, is for my classroom,  however, I encourage you to make one for home. Put a heart on it every time anyone is kind, this includes you mom and dad. Once the quilt is filled, enjoy something fun together like a movie night, ice-cream, or let the kids choose what they want to do for a day.

Instructions

The first step is to cut your scrapbook paper into squares. Mine are sized at 5.5 inches x 5.5 inches.

Either laminate, or cover each square with clear contact paper leaving about .25 excess around each side.

Using a single hole punch, punch a hole into each corner of each square, and then tie them together with pieces of yarn.

Cut the poster board to match the width of the quilt and attach the letters. Laminate or use clear contact paper, and again, punch holes along the bottom, and attach to the quilt with yarn.

Download and print our kindness hearts. These are available on Canva, however, I’ve resized them to fit the quilt squares for you.

As you authentically hear someone being kind, let them know what you heard and write what they said or did on a heart. Attach the heart to the quilt with the date.
