I was recently at my local Goodwill looking for winter hats for my kids at school to use as dress-ups for our winter clothing unit. I found this plain white beanie for under $1 and decided to give it a fun new look for winter.

This beanie makeover is such a simple craft that’s perfect if you can’t crochet or knit but want to embellish a plain beanie. It makes a fun winter craft project for teenagers too. They’ll love making matching beanies with their friends, or make matching ones for the whole family to wear for your winter holiday photos.

Supplies needed

  • Plain beanie
  • Yarn (I used Lion Brand Mandala ombré)
  • Cardboard
  • Large sewing needle
  • Scissors

Note: Clearance sales and thrift stores have the best deals on beanies.

Instructions

We use a simple cardboard ring to make our pom pom, but we also have two more pom pom tutorials so use whichever one works best for you.

Two rings cut out of a cardboard box to make a pom pom

Cut out two identical rings like the one on the right in the image above. Stack them on top of each other, and then wind the yarn around until the hole is almost completely filled.

Pry the two rings apart slightly and using sharp scissors carefully cut the yarn all the way around the edge of the ring (see the image above).

Take a separate piece of yarn and put it between both the cardboard rings and pull it as tight as you can and tie a knot in it. Now you can remove the cardboard.

Trim any yarn sticking out of the pom pom to tidy it up, but leave your long ends right where they are. Use those long ends to stitch the pom pom onto the beanie.

The final step is to use blanket stitch around the folded-over section of the beanie.

You will want to wear this beanie all winter long and make them to match all of your winter outfits.
